Hazing Laws Essay

Hazing should be banned in all states. It's a menace to society and another cause of deaths all around the world. Although, there are places in the world that aren't known for hazing, like Hawaii, but this is a possibility for everywhere and may be better for future. I know that people may think of this as lessening their freedom but, hazing being banned may lower the chance on death caused by hazing and I think of that as having the right to live. You can find hazing from highschool to college, to the military, in the US, Russia, Afganistan, India, all around the world. They are being broadcasted through media by television, newspapers and even can be found on the internet with very grusome pictures that should never be seen by public eyes. Trust me, you really don't. I know this is a way for you to create bonds with your sister/brother-hood but would you want to be found there with the other 1.5 million highschool students who haze? and be a part of the 43% who would find themselves humiliated?

Journal 8: College Plans

Well, I couldn't find an essay topic only a list of things to start the essay for Chapman Univerity.

I decided to use the essay topic on the list of Real College Essay Assignments that you handed out, and used one from there.
The essay that I used was from Carnegie Mellon:
Choose a significant event in your life that had a large impact on you, whether good or bad. How has this event changed you, taught you, or made you a better person, and what have you ultimately learned about yourself?

I researhed about this school. I mean, I didn't just take the topic and run.
I learned about their student life:

I'm not an athelete, and not a very strong writer, but i like the idea of getting out of a classroom and tring something new. I mean, thats the point of being innovative right? To be open to new ideas.

They offer astronomy too, but it's a club.

Journal 9: Ophelia Speaks Coming of Age

On your own blog, tell why your novel is a “coming of age” story. Give specific examples from your reading.

Ophelia Speaks is a Coming of Age book, that gave teenage girls that sent in submissions an outlet to speak about their life changing experiences.
The girls tell their thoughts on their experiences, most are sad, but they really give a real authors point of view. One of my favorite ones is actually in the front, it's a bit morbid but it's actually so descriptive you can the intensity of her eyes and the blade, the thoughts that are going through her head, the idea of her sanity and the idea of her outlet or expression against the doctors, her thoughts and her peers lack of understanding. My favorite is "Insomnia- A Journal Entry" When I read it, I can hear her words pouring out in my thoughts, the urgency and need in her words, " I don't want to die. I want to purge. I want to sleep at night, where nightmares can be woken up from. I am not crazy." She gave us peak into her world, and we saw the living hell of her life, the inability to sleep, the therapists, and the life she's been living, or at least a little of it.
Others tell their other experiences of their life nad how they overcome it. There was a Portorican girl that wanted to give birth. No, she will give birth. Dispite all the judgements of everyone around her, she has made her desision to have her child. "Being a young mother is not a burden upon society." She gave insight on her experience as a pregnant woman.
The author is showing girls that they are not alone, that more than a few people can relate. Each of these stories are there so everyone can relate to this book and not feel alone. Every girl or maybe even everyone, one way or another, has experienced a few of these experiences, and they are things that you will growing up. This is a book, not just a story. It's many stories of girls experiences in life. Thats how this is a coming of age book.

Journal 10: My Dream: College Application/ Personal Statement Essay

Carnegie Mellon:
Choose a significant event in your life that had a large impact on you, whether good or bad. How has this event changed you, taught you, or made you a better person, and what have you ultimately learned about yourself?

I've never really felt this way before, so insecure, so belittled, and so insignificant. I didn’t realize it then but I woke up crying touching the tear that rolled down my check leaving a little trail down my face. And when realized that I was crying I remembered why, and I couldn't stop... The tears over flowed past the rims of my eyes and distorted everything around me. I've never been so emotional in my life and it was all because a dream, that was a stepping-stone that tripped me and made my whole life fall apart. This dream was so real and hit me so hard it knocked he wind out of me, and I felt as if my heart would give out. This dream, in a way, came true, and I could almost remember it all so vividly. But so it seems as if it’s fading away into a memory.
And so starts the memory of both the most beautiful yet the saddest dream of my life...
We were standing there at our special place, our tree in the field of Kalakaua. His left hand was in my right, ... I could still feel the warmth. It felt like an early winter morning, the winds blowing sent a chill down my spine and I shivered. He looked down at me as if he felt the tremor. I could feel the warmth of his smile. The way he just makes me melt inside. I can just feel the rush of emotion he just.... what's the word.... emits. He just emits.
His face against the background of the sky just took my breath away. The morning glow and lightness, gradient colors from dark blue to light, the oranges and pinks of the feathery cirrus clouds. The beauty of this dream and my happiness and over all delight made me think that this dream was going to be a good dream, a happy dream, a dream that I’d love forever and always.
With his hand still in mine, he pulled me into his arms and wrapped them around me, and hugged me in his childish way that he's always does and always makes me laugh. Laying his head on mine, we just waddled around, in a little circle. I just felt so light, feeling the warmth and happiness of his emotions surround me
Suddenly the whole feeling just changed in nearly an instant. The clouds rolled and morphed... As the gloom came, all grew silent, no laughter, no smiles, all emotion stopping us still in our tracks. We watched as the gray clouds covered the light sky, overrunning the joy of those earlier moments, taking over all scenery, that wind blew stronger, so clean, and so clear. In that very moment instant, I knew rain. Almost psychic, I looked up to the sky, and light rain began to fall, and I smiled.
I've always liked the rain, so brisk, so clear, almost as if it cleanses the mind. The rain drops everywhere on top of you, and can feel drops hitting your warm face, feeling a little cool, but as the wind blows, taking your warmth away but leaving you there with an icy feeling that leaves you on edge; aware.
I turned to him smiling, but he just stood there staring at the sky, watching intently, a stern look on his face. The smile that was once on my face had disappeared and in place stood concerns.... what could be wrong?
I tugged on his sleeve to draw his attention. He looked at me despair contorted his face, sadness in his eyes, and the gray sky surrounded him, and water just dripping from his face and hair. He let go of me and lightly shoved me away. I no longer felt his warmth as the wind and rain hit me like driving behind a car on a dirt road with the windows open, little pebbles hitting my face. It felt so empty, nothing but me.
I tried to hold myself, keep myself warm almost holding myself together but.... it wasn't the same. I looked at him trying to understand why, but his eyes, they gave no answer. I walked closer to him, pace by pace, to get him to look me in the eye, but backwards he walked away from me, unable to look at my face.
It grew from light rain to heavier. Past the tree I couldn't see the mountains; I looked around me and saw no houses, no gate, only us and our tree. I reached out for his hand, with my index finger I felt it, but he pulled away. I felt so helpless.
I wanted to ask "why?" but no words came out, as if drowned out by the rain. No matter how much I tried he could not hear me, and I could not hear myself. I was mute but my eyes said it all. He finally looked at me; I saw the feeling of sadness, concern and regret all in his almond shaped dark brown eyes. I saw that he wanted to hold me. I saw the hesitation as his arm reached out, but he thought against it. I was shocked, as his arm went slowly went down as I was reaching for it. He wouldn't look at me as he turned around and walked away. His hand in his pockets, his gloomy stature just faded into the fog. I was left there with the, alone.
He had no idea how much that hurt me; he disappeared in the fog that surrounded us. Running after him was hopeless because I couldn't move no matter how hard I tried. My legs felt cemented to the ground and I was left with nothing else I could do but just collapse and I did. I collapsed onto my knees and cried but no one could see the tears with the droplets falling all over my face, no one heard the sobs or my cries with the storm clouds cry. I was lost and forgotten in the rain and the fog... just abandoned... He never came back.
And now, were back at the beginning. This was one of he most painful dreams in my life. It felt so real, so unbelievably real.
I woke up with a cold sweat, and tears across my face and found myself unable to stop. Unfortunately this wasn't as quiet as the dream. It was 7 o'clock in the morning and for about an hour I cried into my pillow. It was just so real. I sat there thinking about it, lost in my thoughts, and devastated that that would happen, even if they were a dream. Why do I remember? What did it mean? I scribbled everything that happened, thought and reread....
My emotions pained me. The thoughts of being abaondoned, and never being heard, they scared me... Especially at that time, he meant the most to me. Thoughts of that dream always clouded my mind, my arm reaching out to the clouded figure in the fog, and the fact that he never came back did the worst to me. It made it hard to trust him again, the dream was so real, and it made me think that I had to do everything in my path to keep him here with me.
In a way, he did abandon me; we were drifting apart, and with the fact that we were in different schools, that made it harder. Our too different personalities clashed, we got into arguements about attention, our annoying hobbies, and our schedule. He saw me as a stressed out work-a-holic. Don't ask how... I really don't know. I saw him as an emotional slacker, that looks for the easy way out. He saw me as a light eater that put way too much on their plate. But thats just an example, I really do eat a lot and I'm not kidding. I saw him as a layed back rocker hippie that sat on a bean bag chair that let life go by. I think that the only real thing that attracted us to each other was looks and a sense of humor.
I remember a time in sixth grade that i could just look across and he was at eye level. By eighth grade he just shot up, now I always have to look up. I was always telling him "Grow shorter!" whenever I saw him.
He would always tell me a different forceful idea to do that, because really, unless he's like 60 years old, he really couldn't. " I told you, just drop a hundred ton block on the top of my head. That should do the trick."
And I would always answer, "No, thats too much work for me. You do it." And we would have this playful little arguement that would always end in him patting me on the head, and me leaning on him and using his arm as a pillow.
Now it's so different, it's so much harder to be normal around him. I found myself being the one left to call him, and he was alway tweaking on his video games, Call of Duty 4, Rockband, Resistance. It was always me hearing gunshots over the phone, and hearing his brother saying " Head shots again?" and I just groan over the phone, tired of fighting over attention with his video games. Once he left me on hold for almost half an hour. I had to hold my earphone to the mouthpiece of the cellular, turn up the volume of the CD player, and play a screamo song for almost a minute before he realized that I was still there. The next thing that came out of his mouth apauled me, "Oh! I'm so so sorry, I forgot you were there. "...
I guess, that dream really was preparation for the real thing. It really was a hard blow, to knock me down to prepare me for the harder one that would hit me worse. It's like playing with nylon strings on a guitar before you go to steal strings. Nylon strings hurt, especially if you played as long as I did, but once you get the callus there it won't, but if you start playing steal strings from there, your calluses actually get cut, and you can actually feel the the string digging into your skin and cutting it, breaking your calluses that you tried so hard to build up, and making harder ones that last longer. It made me rethink our whole relationship, and made me rethink what I'm really afraid of. Did I really love him? Or was I really afraid of being alone? Did he really love me? Would I feel the same if it was someone else there? Why did I stay with him if I knew that the relationship wouldn't last? Did I really hope it would? Or was I just living in the moment? Was I scared to just cut it there? What did I really see in him? How did I really feel? And why did I keep having these doubts?
The dream made me want to be more independant, because I knew he wouldn't be there forever, and he might just leave me crying in the mud, the rain, and alone. All this came from a dream. No, a nightmare, but this really had an impact on my view of my reality. This just makes me wish I could remember more, but it also makes me scared of another beautiful dream turned horrible nightmare.

Coming of Age: Learning Experience Final Draft

My Experience: "RAHHHHHHHH!!!!" My glare at the computer was deadly. I swear, if I had telekinesis, I would have probably blown it up! At that moment, I wish it did.... No, didn't, I was more angry at myself for not doing, the thing I really needed to do the most! I needed to focus! There were claw marks and nail indentations running down my arms. Papers were all over the floor, and the feeling of my brain being all over the place is starting to get to me. I couldn't keep up with the thoughts that were going 3000 miles per hour in my head. It was like slamming into the side of my skull causing me the migraines of a life time. I was typing the little bits and pieces, notes and phrases. Oh thank god it was only a PowerPoint! Taking the Tylenol didn't help, and just getting up to taking it made me feel dizzy and made my head worse.... My nose was stuffy and my head felt as if it out weighed the rest of my body. My body almost couldn't be supported by my legs. I think it was either the lack of sleep from staying up and studying and using the Faulkes Telescope. Either way, it didn't help me with my presentation. There are going to be very important people there, Ms. Kusunoki (Spark Director), Ms. Kadooka (HI STAR Director), a guy from the DOE, the mentors.... and people who were paying for the program..... This presentation was an important presentation for next morning and Ms. Kadooka had told us the severity of it all week. Me and my partner didn't get the work done in time to finish. She actually went to sleep because she knew that I was paying attention and she wasn't. I was okay with working alone, I do it a lot. It just wasn't fine that she left me without even finishing her reflection at the end of the presentation.... I'm sitting on the working floor in the dorm racking my brain, screeching quietly and talking to myself, trying looking through pages and pages of notes. My hair is in a messy bun, cold sweat is dripping from my face and my eyes are trying to watch the screen but they keep refocusing because they kept seeing black. My room mate is sleeping on her bed, while listening to Taylor Swift, trying to drown out the noisy fan blowing warm air around the room trying to cool it off. I'm stuck there, with the light on on my side of the room, listening to the spinning gears of the fan, and the thoughts that somehow gained voices in my head, and trying to make sense of it. My heart felt like it was beating faster and faster than usual and my eyes started getting out of focus. A wave of heat just hit me and the room just felt like it was moving out of control. I think,... I think I just had an anxiety attack... I couldn't focus to the point where I was getting angry at myself for not. I did everything I could to stay awake and finish, even if it meant scratching and piecing my nails into my skin me to keep the voices quiet for even a moment and let me focus on one. I was almost done at 4am but crashed. I woke up with my alarm at 6:45am, woke up my computer and finished typing by 7. Unfortunately, it wasn't a good morning, but I sucked it up like I always do. Doggie bagged breakfast, finalized everything with my partner and pretty much bit her head off while going over the presentation. I had to track her down like a Hound Dog, while I was still in my pajamas and flip flops. She wasn't really on my good side... My partner crammed her reflection during breakfast. By the time I was done with everything, I had 5 minutes to meet everyone in the lobby and walk to the theater, nearly forgetting the flash drive. My mentor Mr. Bj knew that I was up late working on the PowerPoint, and actually told me I looked terrible. I came there in wet hair, puffy eyes, a runny nose and suffering a minor case of Delirium from lack of sleep. Too bad I was the one who had to say everything. Lucky me. I made the "majority" power point :P and I understood all of it.... She did demonstrations... She had the fun part. Although, I don't think after that night I could have ran around with a Doppler ball, so she can have it. I had a lot of fun laughing at her though. I mean, can you imagine an almost platinum blond running around with a screeching ball? The projector just bounced off her head and it looked like it glowed in that theater. In our shake effect thingy, I forgot wat it was called, because of the gravity... Yeah, I won't go into detail. Lets just say, she's very tall and heavy and I almost fell on her during a presentation because she pulled on me too hard. Everything went pretty well. Could have done better with a more thorough run through together and a non-runny nose, but aside from that, I think it was good. The Delirium added personality! While participating in HI STAR, I now fully understood the stress of a more challenging school. I guess you could say, it made me work harder, and I felt the pressure of everything, and the need to be great. I was really passionate for what I learned, and understood the need to make a good impression. I loved it! I loved presenting something that I was passionate for! I heard the same thing over and over again "You really glowed!" and I believe them. I found something that I was passionate for, and learned that the road to it is really hard and rocky. You have to learn to work under pressure and work well. Perseverance and passion is something that you'd really need if you plan to work with it in the long run. Oh! and sleep helps too! A lot! and organization skills if you have any. With this project, I learned that had to really grow up, because that's really the only way you can succeed, right? This was a giant step in my academic career and I learned a lot from it, and how I really need to change. But really how I needed to grow up.

Writing Experiences and My Goals

While writing throughout the years, I think I learned a way to develop my writing style, but I really don't think that it really evolved until I got to Ms. Sueoka's English Class. There I learned the 6 Traits which are ways to add more feeling to my writing. I've never had to write a real essay before, other than one of those O.S. Papers throughout Middle School. Being in her class really made it a bit difficult and challenging, but I think it's was a good change for me. She made me grow up and made me realize what I had to do to change and advance as a student.

In writing I have many goals too. I want to be more creative and expressive as a writer and find many way to think differently and a bit wild and vivid. To think outside of my natural environment and grow as a writer.
I want to break free from the boring and cliche and make my readers feel the intensity and depth of the words that I wish to convey.
I want to better my writing style to please the readers and excel and escape the boring and dull words. I want to learn to expand my vocabulary. I don't want to cram my words into one small one, I want it to be enigmatic, something that takes awhile to dissect, but I don't want them to be confused trying to think of what I said.
I want my writing to flow, and add structure to whats being said.
I expect mself to change this year and for the better academically. I want ot be a better writer than I am today.
